Besides the McDonald Observatory in West Texas, there are other facilities for use by the public and astronomy personnel in the Austin area.
The 16 inch telescope on the roof of Robert Lee Moore hall is used for observational lab classes and student research. Equipment available includes a plate camera, a CCD and a spectrograph. The telescope received a long-awaited refit in July 1998. This telescope is open to the public on Wednesday Nights.
The Painter Hall telescope is open to the public on Saturday nights and to UT students, faculty and staff on Fridays. Anyone at UT can also be checked out to use the telescope on an individual basis. See the Painter Hall page for more information.
