Astronomy 350L: History and Philosophy of Astronomy

modern view of medieval person examining the cosmos

Unique number: 46605

Course number: Ast 350L

Description: This course examines episodes in astronomy from pre-history to the middle of the twentieth century. The course will not survey all of the history of astronomy, but the episodes will be introduced in a fairly chronological sequence. An effort will be made to place each episode in its historical context. Although it is tempting to draw a straight line from one discovery to another -- to build up a well-connected structure -- science doesn't work that way. However, you will explore how scientists have tried to solve what they considered the important questions of the universe in their era.

The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 3:15 PM.
