Ast/PS 367M: Lenses and Mirrors
Hints for Unit 8

Be sure you use the same set of lenses everytime you take data for this unit. Note the color of the container and ascertain that the components in the container all match. (Most lenses are colored around the rim to match the container color.)

Use a large light source. Since you will later be comparing the size of the image to the size of the object, using an object of a convenient size (e.g. 10 or 20 cm) will make calculations easier. You may wish to make a mask for a larger light source.

Begin with the first lens about one meter from the light source. For each measurement, move the lens about one meter further away until you run out of space.

For each data set, note which lens you are using, the distance from the lens to the object (the light source), and the distance from the lens to the image. Record the size of the object . Record the size of the image for each measurement.

You may wish to make data tables. Make your graphs large enough to easily read. Answer all questions in your notebook.
