There are many websites that list the nearest and brightest stars in the sky. Their values may vary a bit from those listed in the textbook. You can use these values (or the ones listed in your book) and make an H-R diagram for each set of stars with computer tools. Instructions for using Exel to make a graph.

Alternative lists of nearest and brightest stars

• brightest stars. This list has the 25 brightest stars as seen from Earth.

• brightest stars. This list includes the (B-V) value, a numeric measure of temperature, that can be used in place of the spectral type. It would be easier to use this sort of data with a computer graphing program. Note: If you do attempt plotting by computer, it is important to get the data into a format that is similar to that used traditionally by astronomers. Some of the data tables might need to be converted from spectral type to a numeric format (such as temperature or color). To make valid comparisons between the nearest and brightest stars, the plots should use similar data (e.g., both with spectral types) and identical scales.
